Marine Debris Indicators: What’s Next? | An IEEE OES event 16-18 December 2019 – Brest, FRANCE |
A Taxonomy for the Global Digital Ecosystem: Intelligent Semantic Data Agents for Marine Debris Data and Internet of DataHans-Peter Plag and Shelley-Ann Jules-PlagOld Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, USA Marine debris, in particular the rapidly increasing amount of plastics entering the ocean, constitute a global potentially catastrophic risk. There is urgency in linking the available data and knowledge to action and specifically to policy making. Major efforts to link data and knowledge to action have been made over the last 30 years but fundamental progress has not been made. There is a need to consider new and transformative concepts for this linking. A global digital ecosystem for the environment has been proposed and Intelligent Semantic Data Agents are proposed as a concept to populate this ecosystem with a high level diversity. An initial taxonomy consists of domains, classes, families and species. A set of domains is introduced and the relevant classes are considered for the data collection domain. There is a need to facilitate a community to explore this new concept and to develop a framework for a pilot project. Type of contribution: Presentation. |
